Rains and Lady Gaga

Turtleneck: Ann Taylor
Skirt: J Crew
Fishnets: Simply Vera via Kohl's
Booties: Aldo
Belt: Ann Taylor
Earrings: Kohl's
Brooch (on headband): gift from B's grandmother
Headband: gift from my mom

Y'all, this is not what people imagine me wearing when I tell them I live in Costa Rica. I mean, seriously. Cashmere? Turtleneck? Corduroy? Tights? Yes, please. Because it's freezing in the mountains as a general rule. So, I'm dressing for warmth.

The rains here have been the stuff of legend. It's rained pretty much straight for the last ten days, and it's been making the news because it's gotten so bad. Not sure how much coverage it's getting in the States, but it's crazy.

When I wore this to work, my students told me I looked like Lady Gaga, which made me question if they'd ever seen Lady Gaga's outfits because I look like a human and my heels aren't abnormally high. I thought maybe it was because of the big, shiny brooch on my headband (pinning something pretty on a simple elastic headband changes EVERYTHING!).

But no, they clarified that I only looked like Lady Gaga from the knee down. Scratch that, from knee to ankle. You know, Miss, because of those weird tights with the holes in them. Ah, of course. I get it now....

Lazy

Turtleneck: Express
Skirt: Gap
Shoes: Steve Madden
Belt: thrifted
Earrings: Target

Sometimes I just don't feel like getting dressed. On those days, I tend to reach for black because it's easy and I love it. Then I add a little brown so it looks like I tried.

Done and done. Easiest thing ever, am I right?

What do you do when you don't want to think about getting dressed? Any other go to combos out there?

Family Reunion

All remixed except turtleneck
Turtleneck: J Crew
Cardigan: New York & Co.
Skirt: New York & Co.
Belt: Banana Republic
Tights: Simply Vera via Kohl's
Boots: Nine West
Earrings: gift from my mom

I wore this little number for B's family's Christmas reunion on the 26th of December. Yes, I'm still super behind on posting. Frankly, I haven't done a lot of picture taking either. Some of the outfits have been great, others, not so much. Things have been pretty busy, though, and family has definitely taken priority over the blog.

Even so, this outfit was too good not to share. I love the bright blue turtleneck with the bright yellow cardi. I love the subtle patterns in my tights and my belt. I love the various shades of brown, and I love the way my cowboy boots make this look more rugged and fun.

Breaking the rules

All remixed except turtleneck
Turtleneck: Target
Skirt: J Crew
Belt: Banana Republic
Boots: Nine West
Warmest tights ever: ?
Earrings: India (gift)
Bracelet: Banana Republic

I wore this outfit for my last day of work - that was 17 December, if you want to know how behind I am on posting. I loved this look because it broke so many style rules and still worked for me. Plus I'm wearing stealth colors.

B thought this skirt was black, and it does look black in the top photo, but as you can see in the close up shot, it's actually a plummy color that J Crew calls Aubergine. I'll let them call it that, because Aubergine sounds prettier than Eggplant. And then I wore it with a red bracelet. Red and purple? That's one of those style rules, right?

I wasn't sure if I liked the skirt with black, but this was my warmest available sweater, so I made it work. If I say it goes, it goes. The end. And then I tucked my sweater into my skirt, which I'm pretty sure is also one of those things you shouldn't do. People don't tuck in their sweaters, right?

And then I finished the whole thing off with a leopard print belt, black tights, and brown boots. Black and brown is my favorite style rule to break, as I'm sure you've noticed. All those broken rules made me feel sassy and rebellious. Because this is about as rebellious as I get: speeding on the highway and breaking style rules. Watch out, it might get crazy up in here.

P.S. Posting will be light because (a) I'm celebrating Christmas and (b) I'll be visiting my in-laws in Michigan and won't have internet access. There will be a few scheduled posts, but things will be spotty until I'm back in VA on the 30th.
