Friend Friday - Blogger Mechanics

It's Friend Friday!  This week, we're talking about...

Blogger Mechanics

1. What technology do you use in blogging? (computer, camera, video camera, tripod, etc...)
I recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro which I love more than I should, partly because my previous computer (a super old Toshiba) had a cracked screen, frequently crashed, and had a battery that lasted about half an hour. Other than that, I use a Samsung TL105 which is by no means a fancy camera, but it gets the job done. Oh, and I occasionally use a gorillapod.

2. What computer and online technology do you use? (blogging system, photo storage, photo editing tools, etc..)
I'm a Blogger girl. Yes, I've heard a lot about the benefits of being self hosted on WordPress, but since I don't earn a salary, paying for my own domain isn't in the cards right now. And Blogger generally works for me, so, the end.
As far as editing and storing pics, I'm apparently a huge fan of Google, because I use Picasa for storage and Picnik for editing. They're super easy to use. And free. Bonus.

3. What is your process for taking pictures?
I get off work (or get a minute free now that I'm in Costa Rica), find B, give him my camera, and make him take my pictures. There's a lot of awkward posing, because I'm really good at awkward. If awkwardness doesn't yield any good pictures, then silliness ensues. I'll dance around or make crazy faces. This is where most of my Ricky Bobby hands pics come from.  B loves it - at least, that's what I tell him.

4. When it comes to backdrops for your photos what do you consider? Do you scout locations or shoot the same spot daily?
Back in Philly, I usually took pics in the same spot in my kitchen because it had the best light. Occasionally we'd get some nice pictures in other spots, but usually, it was me, the gorillapod, and the kitchen. Now, I feel like I have so many amazing spots with great lighting all over the place. I've been exploring a bit more and branching out right where we live and work. I might find a default spot, but I'm enjoying these experiments with different locations so far.

5. If you could splurge and get one new piece of equipment what would you be buying?
This is easy. A DSLR camera so I can look cool and official when I take pictures of birds at La Paz. My goodness! I've never been so intimidated in my life! Birdwatchers are INTENSE. Just sayin'.

So how about y'all?  What's your picture taking process?  How far do you go to find interesting backdrops?  Seriously, how intense ARE those birdwatchers?!

  1. Great responses...I agree. It doesnt have to be fancy, as long as it works:)

  2. I just got something like the gorillapod, but haven't used it yet. Do you do any editing on your photos?

  3. @ Terri: I do some editing in Picnik when I feel like it. Otherwise, I just do the "I'm feeling lucky" thing on Picasa, maybe crop it so you can't see Kiku's toys and call it a day.
I'm a big fan of Cinemascope and 60s on Picnik, though.

  4. I totally don't think you need to switch to WP, no matter how many bloggers claim it is the best thing ever. You need to do what works best for you and for your blog. And Blogger really is a great platform and so easy to understand. - Katy
